Our Head Kitchen Designer

Managing Director Warren Butler sat down with head designer Mark Williams, and picked his brain about kitchens, kids and broken bones…

Who are you? Tell us your story!

I’m Mark Williams, and I’m the Head Designer here at Butlers Kitchens.

Basically I love kitchens. Designing them, showing them to customers, you name it – if it’s related to kitchens, I’m generally pretty keen.

I’ve been at Butlers Kitchens for just over a year, having worked in similar roles for the last 11 years, and it’s fair to say that it’s the best place I’ve worked!

I focus on the full journey; from imagination to creation, and I’m the first and last person a customer talks to.

What’s the favourite part of your job, and why are you a kitchen designer?

People. I love how diverse and different we are, and the various perspectives that different people bring to a project. Whether it’s a builder, a couple or a family member, everyone has different wants and needs, and bringing all of that together is what makes my job worthwhile.

When you’re involved in something as integral as a kitchen, you end up getting to know people very well. Understanding their likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams and a whole lot more – it’s amazing how many times I’ve been told about pregnancies, with customers keen to make sure the kitchen is baby friendly!

What do people love about Butlers?

I’d boil it down to three things: honesty, integrity and transparency – those are the things that have kept the business going for nearly 90 years.

When you’ve been around that long, there’s a certain amount of reassurance that helps customers to feel safe; we’re not going anywhere in a hurry, and we wouldn’t have this reputation unless we did things the right way.

If you had to give your customers one tip on creating their kitchen, what would it be?

It’s YOUR kitchen. YOU’RE the one that’ll be living in it, no-one else. It’s so easy to get swept up in what other people advise and tell you to do, but you’ve got to remember that the primary people that your kitchen has to work for are you and your family.

If you want a certain layout, a specific colour or a particular type of feature, then do it, and forget what other people think!

If you want it, and it’s possible, then I’ll do everything I can to make it happen for you.

What’s been the favourite kitchen you’ve designed?

Symphony Linear Kitchen - Cheshire
This one. It was a real labour of love – I’d say that I was in contact with the customer three times a day for about six weeks to ensure we got it absolutely spot on.

The customer and his partner found us on Google, and did a virtual showaround, so by the time they made an appointment they were pretty much sold.

That doesn’t mean that the rest of it was straightforward though – we must have changed the layout a dozen times!

That’s absolutely okay though – you have to be happy with the end result, so if it means you’ve got to change your mind a few times to get there, that’s cool with me.

How have you been coping during the lockdown?

COVID-19, What a pain! My heart goes out to everyone affected.

From a business point of view, we had gained some very good momentum in the number of projects, and then it all suddenly stops!

I’m now working from home and doing what I can, whilst also trying to homeschool our 6-year-old daughter and entertain our 2-year-old son!

My wife is a nurse, and is now working on one of the special COVID wards, I really do look up to her and respect the amazing job she and all of her colleagues are doing.

We’re hoping that we’re over the worst and looking forward to things getting back to something more like normal soon.

Give us an unusual fact about you

I’ve never broken a bone in my body! Which quite frankly is an absolute miracle, given the scrapes I’ve got myself into.

What are your favourite pastimes?

Right up to my early 20s I literally played every sport that was available to me!

I played Roller Hockey for Wales, which was pretty amazing, and ended up going to Manchester as part of the Commonwealth Games to introduce the sport, which was a very special moment in my life.

These days, I love football, darts and golf – I got my handicap down to around 9 a few years ago, so that’s the number to beat!
